Is there a new Command & Conquer Generals game in the work at EA?

All hope may not have been lost for Command & Conquer, the once-giant strategy games franchise of old. If these news are to go with, we may be a few months away from an exciting new reveal; the first in more than four years.

Command & Conquer had conquered the hearts of millions back in the day, as two games of the series, Red Alert 2 and Generals, have single-handedly popularized the strategy genre when it wasn’t exactly a mainstream favorite. However, it has been more than eight years since we last had a C&C game ever since the release of Red Alert 3 in 2009. Fans have been waiting eagerly for another title since then.

It may have not been the same for EA ever since it shutdown Westwood Studio fifteen years ago, as RA3 wasn’t exactly well-received by the fans the same way as the originals and a failed C&C Generals 2 project more than four years ago made us think it’s all over for the franchise. However, a single tweet by “Greg Black” rekindled our hope.

The veteran strategy games designer of Red Alert 2, LotR: Battle for Middle Earth-II and Command & Conquer announced to Twitter that he’d in fact came back to work at EA, nine years after working at Blizzard on StarCraft 2. Not only that, but he also revealed he’s working on something he “can’t wait” till he can share with the world.

This of course doesn’t confirm or deny it’s C&C related, but when remembering EA’s last quotes about the franchise it’s fair to say it might be the case.

“We believe that Command & Conquer is a powerful franchise with huge potential and a great history, and we are determined to get the best game made as soon as possible. To that end, we have already begun looking at a number of alternatives to get the game back on track.”

Is Command & Conquer finally making its return? We’ll have to wait till next year to find out. Meanwhile, we’ll celebrate the news by playing few matches of Generals tonight.
