From Riot higher-ups:
It's a when and not an if there will be a League of Legends World Cup. They want to do it and do it right, but it'll take time (possibly years) for them to do it. They know the players have a full schedule and want to make it something worth playing in. pic.twitter.com/4lJ01c8pkD

This is not the first time we have heard about the possibility of creating a World Cup for the game. Riot’s head of e-sports, John Needam, spoke last week about the issue, saying that such a tournament is one of the company’s repeated requests, and that it is looking into its potential now considering the importance of Fans interacted with their national teams, promising to announce related news soon.
Riot tried a similar idea for a national competition in 2011 when it organized an event called Sound Blaster Nations Championship involving seven international teams, but it was a small event that was never repeated. The idea of the World Cup has been applied in several other games such as Overwatch, StarCraft II and PUBG, as well as global public competitions such as the Asian Games and the Olympics soon.
